Iron is common in groundwater. It's usually a nuisance rather than a health concern, but it can stain fixtures and clog plumbing.
Signs of iron
Look for orange or brown stains on sinks and laundry, a metallic taste, or water that turns rusty after sitting. The EPA's non-enforceable guideline for iron is 0.3 milligrams per liter, based on taste and staining.
Why the type of iron matters
Dissolved iron looks clear coming out of the tap and turns rusty in air. Particle iron is visible right away. Iron bacteria can leave a slimy buildup, often in toilet tanks.
Each type can need a different treatment, so test before you buy equipment.
How it's usually fixed
Options include sediment filters for particles, softeners for low levels of dissolved iron, oxidizing filters for higher levels, and well disinfection for iron bacteria.
